Welcome to our Web site!

The Steam Boat Association of Australia is a non-profit organisation consisting  people with a keen interest in steam driven vessels of all types, large and small, old and new.

The association has over 100 members around Australia and about 40 "launch" size steam boats on the register.

Many of our members own "Putt Putts"... a term used to describe open launches with older- style petrol inboard motors. Most of our waterway activities feature a mixture of steam and 'infernally" powered boats. As both steam and putt putt are similar size and speed they go well together on the water and a putt putt has been the first step towards a steamer for some members.

On these pages you will find details of a variety of Australian steamboats and steamboat projects and links to other sites of interest to fans of maritime steam

The Association meets quarterly, usually on the third Thursday of February, May. August and November at 7.30pm in the Drummoyne Sailing Club in Sydney.

Meetings are informal and will usually attract a guest speaker. Recent topics have included propellers, patternmaking, experiences from the engine rooms  of the Union Steamship Company ships in the 1950's and building a triple expansion engine. A DVD featuring ship-breaking in India attracted much interest at our August 2006 meeting.

The association publishes a quarterly journal; 'Steam Leak" that includes details of steam boat activities, member's projects, technical articles of interest to the steam-boater and reports of member's cruises.
